Focus on Mark’s marketing career at CWT
Not afraid of hard graft, Mark joined as a graduate and his career highlights include his promotion to the marketing team and a trip to Miami
“I really rate CWT as an employer – they encourage you to work and play hard, which is essential in any marketing or events role.”
In one sentence, I would describe my job as:
Exciting and challenging, no day is ever the same!
The first thing I do when I get into work is:
Check my emails and prioritise which ones need an urgent response. Then I put together a task list for the day.
The best thing about working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel:
Working closely with industry leaders and travelling to some great locations, both in the UK and abroad.
Top 3 highlights at Carlson Wagonlit Travel so far:
1. Travelling to Miami with a small group of CWT staff. This was courtesy of BA
and Hilton so we could familiarise ourselves with their products and the destination.
2. Meeting celebrities in glamorous locations. Recently I met Kelly Brook at the
Mayfair hotel – I told her she looked stunning in her dress and she complimented me on my suit!
3. Helping to organise CWT UK Exchange 2010 – most people agree that the UK events
team puts on the best CWT events!
Most challenging aspect of working in the corporate travel industry:
Multi-tasking and meeting tight deadlines.
My path to success goes something like this:
Tourism Management degree > Business travel consultant for a major Energy Services client at CWT > Marketing partnership and events executive at CWT
What I’ve learnt and how I’ve developed:
-
Don’t be afraid to start at the bottom.
-
Show willingness and initiative – “never say no” (invaluable advice from my dad).
-
Develop your skills whenever you can, for example I got involved in managing CWT events.
-
Have belief in your abilities – I no longer ask my manager for approval on everything I do.
My favourite/memorable travel destination:
Travelling to Gambia with university in 2006 and helping in the local villages, schools and fields picking crops. It was an amazing experience and very humbling. It made me appreciate everything I have as we stayed in mud huts for most of the trip.
When I’m not working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I like:
Socialising with my friends and family in restaurants, bars or just at home. I’m also an ex-competitive swimmer so I love my sport and go to the gym regularly.
If you’re thinking of working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I’d say:
Go for it! It’s a great company and they really do value their staff and help with career progression.
“Not only is Mark fantastic at taking care of every little detail, he’s also lots of fun to work with and is always coming up with creative ideas. Just recently he was asked to re-style the staff break room at head office!” Jo Banham, senior programme manager
