Gamification in corporate travel

Is gamification an effective corporate travel management technique?

Gamification. The new business buzz word. But can it help to drive business travel compliance?

What is gamification?

Gamification is about making a game out of a non-game environment to get people to behave in a certain way. For example, when travellers collect air miles and hotel loyalty points, their ‘good’ behaviour is rewarded with free flights and upgrades.

But can this system be applied to the managed travel space, and can it be used to change travellers’ behaviour for the better?

How can you use gamification?

  • Include league tables in staff newsletters with the best performing department winning a prize

  • Reward travellers who book flights in advance and use preferred hotels

  • Note which travellers review hotels, airlines and car hire companies on the intranet. All this good behaviour will help you with negotiations in the long term

  • Educate travellers and give employees the motivation to save money

Why not just mandate?

In reality there are very few companies who mandate their travel programme as it’s tricky to manage; for example, what do you do if they don’t comply? The ideal situation for most of our clients is for travellers to have all the information they need to make the right decision for their company and themselves when on the road.
