CWT UK Achieves ISO 14001 Environmental Accreditation

LONDON, April 20, 2011 – Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) UK has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental management standards. The accreditation is an important commitment for CWT as part of its corporate social responsibility practices and continued focus on sustainability, even through the economic downturn.

“Achieving this accreditation is the culmination of the work CWT has undertaken over the past few years to ensure that we are leading the way on sustainability,” said Andrew Waller, executive vice president, UK & Ireland.

With ISO 14001 accreditation, CWT brought its sustainability efforts together under one framework, updated its environmental policy and created an environmental management system that sets performance measures and actions with the goal of continuous improvement. In 2011, CWT UK has committed to a minimum 5% reduction across all output measurements, such as waste and energy usage.

CWT’s core initiatives that contributed to ISO 14001 accreditation include:
• A green fleet review to reduce emissions, raise awareness and educate employees on smarter alternatives to driving wherever possible
• A comprehensive ‘reduce and recycle’ scheme to lessen the environmental impact of operations, including increased use of e-invoicing for clients, providing recycling facilities in all CWT office locations and reducing energy and water usage
Educating staff and clients on sustainable ways to travel and work, including ‘green champions’ who engage with all levels and departments throughout CWT to support the sustainability agenda

At the same time, CWT helped its clients gradually reduce CO2 emissions on average by 10.5%, largely through the use of CWT’s carbon calculator and management reporting, part of CWT Sustainable Solutions.

Sandy Moring, senior director, programme management and sustainability, consults with clients on the best sustainability management and reporting for their travel programmes, and also led CWT UK & Ireland’s ISO 14001 accreditation process, collaborating with all departments throughout the organisation.

Fostering CWT’s culture and the spirit of the accreditation through continuous improvement, Moring will lead CWT’s next steps including further paper reduction schemes and responsible supply chain management.

In addition to ISO 14001, CWT is accredited for CAESER - Environmental Sustainability and Equality and Diversity; and Achilles Category A. CWT is a member of the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) and also has been recognised for:

• ‘Best UK Agency’ or ‘Intermediary’ – Winner – ITM ICARUS Sustainability Awards 2007, 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2011
• ‘Best CSR Programme’ – Highly Commended – Business Travel Awards 2011
